CompTIA released the updated Security+ SY0-701 exam in November 2023, replacing SY0-601. If you are preparing for Security+, here is everything you need to know about the new version.

What Changed in SY0-701?

The SY0-701 update reflects the evolving cybersecurity landscape, with a stronger emphasis on:

  • Zero Trust architecture
  • Cloud-focused security concepts
  • AI/ML threats and responses
  • Automation and scripting in security operations
  • Updated compliance and regulation requirements

What Stayed the Same

The core structure remains similar — the exam still covers threats, attacks, vulnerabilities, architecture, implementation, and operations. The fundamental security concepts remain unchanged.

Exam Format

  • Maximum 90 questions (multiple choice + performance-based)
  • 90-minute time limit
  • Passing score: 750 out of 900
  • Available via Pearson VUE (online or testing center)

How to Prepare

Use official CompTIA study materials (CertMaster Learn or CertMaster Labs) combined with practice exams. Most candidates need 2–3 months of preparation. Professor Messer's free Security+ course on YouTube is also highly recommended.
